Known for its stunning, utterly mouthwatering Instagram profile (@Magees_Curbside), this place has been gaining ground as one of the prime new comfort food joints in Stamford, Connecticut, and beyond. The restaurant boasts an unforgettable menu that will appeal to anyone with a stomach who is ready to chow down on some messy food.
It is located in what seems to be a large industrial district, but don’t let its looks deceive you. Go inside and sink your teeth into the famous 7 AM fries (or any other dish on the menu for that matter) and you will actually experience what makes this restaurant special.
As my eyes surveyed the small and somewhat empty-feeling atmosphere, the first thing that caught my attention were the unique green and white checkered table covers: a beautifully simple piece of the restaurant that drew me in.
While stepping up to the ordering stand, I formulated a plan of attack upon the restaurant’s desire-inducing menu. My Father and I decided to get the 7 AM Fries, The Waffle and Wings, and The #1 Pick.
7 AM Fries are the cream of the crop of all “skillet dishes” I have laid eyes on and teeth in. The hulking meal is made up of a base of fries that are crisp on the outside yet tender and unctuous on the inside, with just about enough grease to sedate a small elephant. They are topped with a juicy, shredded clump of pulled pork, a slathering of silky, melted cheddar cheese, a dusting of salty, sweet candied bacon, chopped vivid green scallions, and a crisp-edged, golden-yolk sunnyside up egg on top. This was the perfect start to my day!
Waffles and Wings have been a comfort food staple since the very beginnings of comfort food itself, and when done right, you will never forget the glorious mingling of flavors the dish delivers. The crispy Jack Daniel’s-smothered honey-maple wings meld perfectly with the sweet, cakey, moist nature of the sugar waffle. The bacon blueberry compote that accompanies the duo is something special – a flavor profile that cannot be matched by any other sauce of compote I have ever tasted. It pairs beautifully with the Waffle and Wings.
The #1 Pick Sandwich was perhaps the highlight of my meal. The sandwich is built on a base of soft, spongy, locally-sourced sourdough bread, topped with utterly tender and juicy short rib that had been braised for a whopping eight hours, crusty caramelized candied pork belly, melted gruyere that oozes into each nook and cranny of the meat, and a sweet demi glaze.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my small, delectable meal at Magee’s Curbside, and I cannot wait to try more on their menu in the future. I give it ZZZZ- 4 Z’s- Yum!
