A few weekends ago we traveled to Ousel and Spur Pizza Co. 50 Ousel Falls Road, Big Sky MT. (http://www.ouselandspurpizza.com). This was not the only time we ate at Ousel and Spur, we ate the pizza a second time later in the week! The second time we ordered take out. It is very surprising to see such a modern, refined pizza restaurant in Big Sky, Montana, but Ousel and Spur fits that description perfectly.
The atmosphere of Ousel and Spur is very cool, modern, and most of all clean. It seemed that the designers of the restaurant wanted to create a nice, contemporary restaurant that people would want to return to, time and time again. After we were sat down, we were greeted by a waitress that was fairly nice and even joked around with us at some points in our meal.
When it was time to order starters we got, Winter Polenta (creamy yellow polenta, fresh winter squash, moist kale, juicy wild mushrooms, and velvety chèvre cheese). In addition to that we had a Shrimp Crostini and an Arugula Salad. The shrimp crostini had tender, fresh shrimp, vibrant red peppers, sautéed kale, all piled high on a slice of crisp local Montana bread. The Arugula Salad had bitter Arugula, sweet, bright red beets, warm, toasted hazelnuts, smooth creamy Chèvre cheese, a juice filled Asian pear, and a light, airy Prosecco Vinaigrette.
For our entrees we obtained, a Margherita Pizza (smooth, fresh mozzarella cheese, tangy tomato sauce, herbaceous basil to enhance the flavor of the pies, a grated Grana Padano cheese, and a silky olive oil).
In addition to that we had a onion/truffle oil pizza (my absolute favorite), a bacon pizza, and a pepperoni, egg, and garlic pizza.
All of these pizzas had hot gooey cheese, oozing from their crispy, charred crusts. The onion truffle oil pizza was an unbeatable combo. The sweet sautéed onions matched perfectly with the decadent, fragrant smell/taste of the caramelized onions. The bacon on the bacon pizza was crunchy, and very satisfying. Unfortunately on my pepperoni, egg, and garlic pizza, they messed up my order, and gave me peppers instead of pepperoni. The egg on the pizza was bursting with a warm, golden, yellow yolk.
They also gave me raw garlic instead of roasted garlic. My Mom ordered a gluten free pizza!
The (unappetizing looking) pizza had juice-filled peppers, smooth chèvre cheese, moist spinach, and tangy olives. My Mom loved it!
For dessert we ordered moose tracks ice cream. The moose tracks is made by the best ice cream maker ever, Wilcoxsons!
Moose tracks contains rich, swirled fudge, mini peanut buttercups, and cold, refreshing vanilla ice cream.
The meal was fine, but certainly not something to get worked up about. The service was decent, but our waitress messed up my order in two ways and was not very friendly. The atmosphere of Ousel and Spur was awesome. It was crisp, clean, and precise in all that was in the restaurant. The value of Ousel and Spur was very reasonable for the huge amount of food we ate. Overall Ousel and Spur was good pizza for Montana but if it were anywhere else, the restaurant would not do as well as it does in Montana. I would not recommend it, but if you have a craving for pizza and you happen to be in Montana, this is the place for you. I would give it, ZZZ- 3 Z’s- Fine.
