You’ll be Hearing about Fearings!

“I don’t eat friggin’ lobster or anything like that. Because they’re alive when you kill it.”

Snooki

The next place we traveled to in Dallas, was Fearing’s (http://fearingsrestaurant.com/, 2121 McKinney Ave, Dallas, TX ). Fearing’s is located right in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton. Although we knew Fearing’s was going to expensive, we decided to try it anyway. Another reason why we went to the restaurant was because Dean Fearing (the owner of Fearing’s) is one of the most renowned chefs in Dallas.

When we entered Fearing’s we noticed the modern, clean atmosphere and the pristine open kitchen. As a result of open kitchen, you could see all of the tedious prep work put into each meal. Soon after we arrived, we were guided to a beautifully set up table in the open kitchen. After we sat down, we were quickly greeted by a kind and courteous waiter who took our order and strived to please us in every way possible. For example he brought out the chef who personally guided my mom through what she could eat and what she couldn’t. This is because of her dairy and wheat allergies and her vegetarianism. In addition he requested special dishes to be made for my mom’s enjoyment.

Just as we arrived, we noticed a heaping, hot basket filled with numerous breads. There were spongy bacon, corn and oozing cheese muffins, as well as springy white sliced baguette, and a crisp cracker. My favorite was the muffin because of the unique mix of flavors.

IMG_4083

A big ol’ basket of bread

When it was time to order appetizers we got Coconut Lobster Bisque (creamy, soothingly warm Coconut bisque with  hints of flavorful lobster). The Lobster Bisque contained a hefty lobster potsticker filled to the brim with delectable goodies.

IMG_4086

Delisque Bisque

The bisque was warm/toasty and coated my sore throat.

As an amuse bouche (gift from the kitchen) they brought us  free short rib shots. I though the shot was cold and slimy and contained nauseating mushroom broth and flaccid mushrooms.

IMG_4084

Flaccid Flop

The shot was horrible and I feel bad for the people in the restaurant that ate it without tasting it first.  My Dad seemed to enjoy it though.

My brother and dad ordered shrimp tacos. They had been eying this dish while they studied the menu. The tacos contained tender shrimp and was slathered in a warm, tangy orange sauce.

IMG_4088

Taco Time

It also contained crunchy, fresh vegetables and was wrapped in a tortilla blanket. My brother and dad loved these tacos and could have kept eating them all night.

For my main meal I ordered a Fearing’s version of  Surf and Turf that I split with my little brother. The Surf and Turf contained succulent, juicy chicken fried lobster, as well as tender, juice-filled bison steak that made warm steak juices drip down your face.

IMG_4090

I would surf to get this turf

In addition they served us smooth, velvety mashed potatoes with bright pink pickled onions on top. The meal was great but the lobster was a little on the tough side.

My dad ordered a bone in rib-eye steak that was oozing with warm juices grilled over  mesquite and topped with silky Texas mop sauce. In addition the plate contained, chilled, refreshing cole slaw with a humongous pile of freshly cut fries that were crisped to perfection.

IMG_4093

MMMMMeat

He enjoyed this dish. On the side he ordered a large helping of lightly fried asparagus and moist, surprisingly delicious corn bread pudding.

IMG_4089

They look like fried fingers- but taste really good

The asparagus was fantastic and I could keep eating them like potato chips.

My mom had a tender, butter-like Big Eye Tuna Duo with refreshingly light raw tuna.

The main courses were very good, but the dessert was out of this world!  We had buttered popcorn ice cream squeezed in between two strange coca-cola brownies. In addition we had a small bottle of cold, bubbly cream soda.

IMG_4100

Special Feature Dessert

The desserts were very yummy and the combinations they put together we incredible.

Overall the food at Fearing’s was extremely appetizing and pleasing. Fearing’s has been consistently voted in the top ten restaurants in the US. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also fantastic. It was quite fancy and the relaxed feel to it created an even better atmosphere. The value of Fearing’s was expensive and I would only recommend it if you are having a night on the town. It is too expensive to eat everyday! The service was out of bounds. The waiters and chefs catered to our every request and tried to make out stay at the restaurant as enjoyable as possible.  I would give Fearing’s ZZZX- 3 3/4 Z’s- Delicious.

Food & Family

While you are pursuing your “professional athlete” dream, or wondering how your 5 foot 10 height will ever gain you a spot in the NBA, I am thinking about food. Marveling at the vast varieties is what keeps me occupied. In a nutshell, food is my life. A day doesn’t go by without me thinking about my next meal. Initially, the reason why I loved food was not clear. But after much thought, I began to realize that in my family, food and love are intertwined.

Friends often hope to make plans with me over the weekend, but most of the time I decline. It’s not because I am anti-social, it is because I am most likely going on a food adventure.

IMG_3427

Road Trip to Florida

My family and I spend numerous weekends sampling and savoring delicious foods from various places. This may sound weird to you, but it is astonishingly exciting. We wake up fairly early and begin eating. We start with breakfast, then go to lunch, then go to a second lunch, then dinner, and finally dessert.

IMG_4588

My second lunch of the day

An odd thing that we noticed is that, going on food trips excites us more than going on a regular vacation. We go to bed pleased, on a full stomach and wake up feeling rested, ready for another day of eating. During these food adventures, we gain delightful memories and these blissful, cheerful memories will last us a lifetime.

A perfect example of the love in my family is Thanksgiving. The crispy turkey crunches against my teeth as I spot a smooth pile of warm, buttery mashed potatoes that are sprinkled with large chips of sea salt on the side of my plate. While I eat my fantastic meal, I listen to the happy, vibrant chatter of my close family. They reminisce about their past years and happily devour everything in sight. For as long as I can remember, we have had a tremendous Thanksgiving where each relative brings mouth-watering delicacies for the rest of us to share. From piping hot, smooth pumpkin pie to sweet potatoes encrusted in crisped melted marshmallows. The food makes my whole family happy.

IMG_2769

Thanksgiving Delights

The thought of the tireless effort that my relatives put into the meals that they prepared is hard to comprehend. My family begins preparing their dishes weeks before Thanksgiving! Even if something is cooked a few minutes past its prime, everyone enjoys knowing that effort is put into the dishes each Thanksgiving.

The love in my family can be linked with something as simple as cake. A moist, spongy chocolate cake is spotted in the distance. Its cold arms are wearing a decadent chocolate frosting jacket with crunchy M and M jewels spread all over the back.

IMG_0884

The World’s Best Cake

For numerous birthdays, anniversaries, and other extremely important events, my 92-year-old Great- Grandmother Guda makes the same chocolate cake. The cake has never changed, since the first time my 1 year-old taste buds got a taste of it to when my braces imprisoned choppers taste the mouth-watering cake now. Another unwavering thing about the cake is what is put into it. In addition to eggs, flour, and I would imagine a lot of sugar; there is one secret ingredient. Love. The love she puts into the cake is evident when you taste each tiny, delicious morsel of it. Even though today her hands are arthritis-ridden and it hurts her to even mix the ingredients, she still makes it for every special or meaningful event and the love increases every year. Once you realize the love she puts into the cake, it’s a piece of cake to give her that love right back.

IMG_1109

My Great Grandmother Guda and I

Everyone has a calling or passion. Passion is described by Wikipedia as an intense emotion, compelling feeling, enthusiasm, or desire for something. This is what a feel with food. Your calling is something that you want go to the edge of the world to explore. Food is my calling. It has led me to create a blog called Asherzeats and have my own radio show for an NPR station. I love food, and that love for food will remain in my life forever. While famous foodies like Guy Fieri or Adam Richman are scanning the globe to find their next spot to eat, I too am tirelessly pursuing my next pigout zone. Your passion is a hard thing to discover, and after countless delectable meals, I think I have discovered something I can finally sink my teeth into.

A Sunny Day at Sonny Bryan’s

The man who invented Doritos has passed away at the age of 97. He asked to be buried with the creator of Fritos and Cheetos in a variety pack.

Jimmy Fallon

Our next stop on our trip to Dallas was one of the best. We traveled to the original Sonny Bryan’s (http://www.sonnybryans.com/restaurants/dfw/original-inwood.html, 2202 Inwood Road, Dallas, TX 75235).

IMG_4066

A good sign is a SIGN that the restaurant will be good!

Sonny Bryan’s has been dishing out fantastic BBQ since 1910, when they opened. Sonny Bryan’s has a vintage atmosphere. Old school desks line the restaurant (they also have seating outside) and pictures of famous people who have eaten at the restaurant cover the walls. There are other locations, but this is the original.  A man strolled around and took our orders while we studied the vast menu.

IMG_4067

So many choices!

After we ordered, the same man called our name and gave us our food. When we finally found a table outside, the birds had already gotten there. They were devouring the leftover foods and were eying ours.

We ordered a huge Frito Pie (warm, succulent ground beef under a blanket of crisp scallions, smooth melted cheese, and baked beans). On the side was a small bowl of decent, saucy baked beans. The Frito Pie was said to be award winning, and I would have to agree. It was fantastic!

IMG_4069

It didn’t look this pristine for long!

We also had tender ribs with sweet, silky BBQ sauce slathered on. The ribs were served with several huge, crunchy onions and a warm, spongey bun.

IMG_4072

Onions Halo’s.

I did not like the onions rings very much but my family thought otherwise. My dad and brother loved the ribs .

In addition to the yummy ribs, we got incredible BBQ pork sandwiches. The sandwiches contained moist, juicy pulled pork, and the tremendous meat was squished in between two pillowy, soft buns with sauce oozing out of the sides.

IMG_4073

Simple but delicious

The BBQ pork sandwich was my favorite, and I could eat numerous sandwiches without getting sick. Sonny Bryan’s sauce was stored in used Corona bottles and served hot.

To drink we had a Sweet Tea and a Dr. Pepper. The Dr. Pepper was made in Texas and was extremely refreshing. The Sweet Tea was cold and quenched my thirst.

IMG_4074

This sweet tea was sure sweet!

For dessert we bought a packaged apple pie. The pie was FILLED with sugar and was slightly nauseating.

IMG_4075

Packaged Apple Pies, I think so!

IMG_4076

S-U-G-A-R!

The food at Sonny Bryan’s was incredible and the  atmosphere  was very cool. The vintage objects around the restaurant made the dining experience even better. The people who took our orders were extremely friendly and you could tell they had experience on the job.

The value at the restaurant was very reasonable, considering the huge sandwiches, ribs, and Frito Pies we obtained. Overall I would definitely return to Sonny Bryan’s in the near future and I would recommend it to anyone in the Dallas Area. I would give it ZZZZ- 4 Z’s- Awesome!

I Found Mecca

“I gotta show em’ how to eat right man, that’s all…I got all five food groups. Pancakes, sausage-egg McMuffin, cinnamon roll, large orange juice…I just be juiced all day”.  Chad Ochocinco

Our second stop during our food extravaganza, was Mecca (http://themeccarestaurant.com/, 5815 Live Oak Street, Dallas) . No, not the religious Mecca, the food Mecca!

IMG_4036

I found Mecca!

The name Mecca fits the restaurant perfectly. The food there makes you want to keep returning and tempts you to go on a long pilgrimage to reach Mecca. Mecca (founded in 1938) is famous for their enormous Cinnamon Buns (more about these later).

The restaurant has breakfast, lunch, and most recently, dinner. Mecca is loved by all the locals in Dallas and satisfy’s all tourists. When we entered we were happily greeted by a very chipper, excited waitress who took our orders and told us a little about the restaurant.

To start our meal off, we ordered two huge, soft, airy Cinnamon Buns. The buns were slathered with a rich, decadent frosting and was swimming  in a warm, soothing pool of melted butter.

Before

The Cinnamon Bun was incredible. It was devoured in seconds and snagging a good picture of it was very difficult because of the greedy hands snatching at it.

IMG_4047

After

For our main meals we got Fried French Toast (crisp and crunchy on the outside and pillowy on the inside French Toast).

IMG_4050

Fried Delight!

The French Toast was delicious and the deep fried element of it just made it even more delectable.

My brother ordered moist, spongy pancakes with fresh, strawberries on top.

IMG_4052

Strawberry Pancakes- Genius

Although he ate a little too much cinnamon bun, he still enjoyed the pancakes.

My mom had a sad, lonely bowl of oatmeal. The oatmeal looked sticky and unappetizing, so I didn’t eat it.

My Dad ordered the Migas (scraggly scrambled eggs with crispy corn tortilla chips, aromatic onions/peppers, warm, melted cheese, and gross refried beans).

IMG_4054

Midas made the Migas Golden

He loved it!

My younger brother ordered two lone eggs with hot, steaming biscuits and smooth gravy.

IMG_4053

It’s always Sunny in Mecca

In addition to that he had a buttery grits.

The food at Mecca was fantastic and I would get that cinnamon bun again in a heart beat. The atmosphere was slightly cluttered but it was cozy and inviting. The service at Mecca was very accommodating. Our waitress one of the best we met in Dallas. The value at Mecca was extremely reasonable! The cinnamon bun was as big as my head! Overall I would definitely return to the Mecca whenever I come back to Dallas. I would give it ZZZZ- 4 Z’s- Awesome.

Everything’s Bigger in Texas!

“An onion can make people cry, but there has never been a vegetable invented to make them laugh.”

- Will Rogers

Last weekend my family and I traveled to Dallas, Texas to go on a food adventure. We had an interesting arrival into Dallas. The plane arrived slightly later than expected and as a result had to scrap our original dinner plans. On the bus ride to the car rental building, my Dad found the restaurant Peace Burger on Yelp (www.peaceburger.net, 1228 William D Tate Avenue, Grapevine TX). We decided to give it a try! Peace Burger dishes out a variety of burgers and is open around the clock. Most of the time, it is packed!.

IMG_4017

Peace Out

When we entered Peace Burger we noticed the bar-like atmosphere with large T.V.’s and Dallas related jerseys and memorabilia everywhere.

We could barely hear the conversation that our family was having. This was because of the loud college bar scene. We even witnessed a plump college kid pull a shirt over his head and announce to the whole restaurant that he was in fact a dinosaur. When a waitress finally made it past the crazy Dino-man she began taking our orders.

IMG_4019

The menu sounded better than the actual food

We started our meal off with Carne Asada Fries (a blanket of salty, juicy meat and gooey cheese over a bed of crisp French fries). This was topped off with smooth, velvety guacamole, spicy jalapenos, and tart sour cream.

IMG_4021

Looks unappetizing- but was actually really good

The Carne Asada was a big hit at our table, and everyone wanted seconds… except my mom who steered clear of the gluttonous food we ate. She had water.

In addition to that, we had a humongous trough full of fried pickle slices and jalapenos.

IMG_4024

Fried Goodness

These fried delicacies were crunchy on the outside and bursting with dill flavor on the inside.

As you may have already guessed, Peace Burger is famous for their burgers! The burger that my brother and I ordered was called the Macho (hot, juice-filled, briny Chorizo, crisp, aromatic onion rings, melted Monterey Jack cheese, and plump, butter-like avocados spread on top).

IMG_4026

Looks can be deceiving. Looks good- tastes bad.

The burger was decent but the amount of salt-soaked meat the burger contained was insane! It was enough salt to make a salt lick for deer.

My dad ordered the Brisket Tacos (tender brisket coated in warm layers of Monterey Jack cheese, silky avocados, grilled onions with great grill marks on them, and mild Poblano chili peppers).

IMG_4029

Chipotle is better than this.

My younger brother ordered the Cowboy Burger (crispy, perfectly cooked bacon, bright orange cheddar cheese, an oily fried egg, and mouth tingling pico salsa).

IMG_4025

Enough meat to feed a Dallas Cowboy!

He thought the burger was fine, but the burger did not rank highly on his list.

Overall the food contained a lot of salt. As a result of the over usage of the salt, the food was not enjoyed greatly by my family.

The atmosphere of Peace Burger was crazy. Insane college kids everywhere and jerseys/ memorabilia all over the restaurant. The service of Peace Burger was efficient.  Although we did not interact very much with our waitress, she did a good job delivering our food. The value at peace burger was cheap for the large mounds of meat we obtained.

Overall Peace Burger was not great, and I would probably not return anytime soon. I would give it, ZZ- 2 Z’s- we went to sleep yearning for a better meal!

Itchin for the Candy Kitchen!

“There’s more juice in a grapefruit than meets the eye”

-Unknown Author.

Last weekend my brother and I traveled to the beautiful Bridgehampton to see my grandparents. I have been to Long Island many times before and we always go to lunch at the Candy Kitchen (2391 Montauk Hwy, Bridgehampton, NY, (631) 537-9885). The Candy Kitchen is a classic diner type restaurant with yummy food. When we entered we were greeted by my Grandfather’s friend Gus, who owns the restaurant. He was very friendly to us and showed us to our booth. The Candy Kitchen is not the normal “fancy” restaurant you would find in the Hamptons. The Candy Kitchen has been around before the Hamptons were “THE HAMPTONS”

The Candy Kitchen has two areas, the regular front room and what we refer to as Siberia (the back room separated from everything). The walls are painted a subtle light blue, and a slightly dulled white. In addition the shelves are lined with various varieties of candy. When we were about to order, we noticed that who else but Ina Garten (world-famous Food Network Star and cookbook author), was sitting to the left of us. She seemed to be enjoying her meal!

IMG_3995

You see everybody at the Candy Kitchen!

For our meals we ordered a B.L.T (crisp, satisfying bacon, fresh lettuce, juicy tomatoes, with smooth, spicy honey mustard slathered on). This was squeezed in between two soft, pillowy pieces of non-toasted bread.

IMG_3999

This bacon was crunchy beyond belief.

The B.L.T was delectable but it did not compare to previous top-rated  B.L.T’s I have had in Costa Rica, The Crowne Candy in St Louis, and at Spic and Span in Southport.

My grandpa ordered half of a refreshing, juice filled cantaloupe with creamy, bright white cottage cheese in the middle. He also had a bitter, sugarless grapefruit, and unappetizing toast that was a dry as a bone. My Grandfather is a vegan and eats extremely healthily every day.

IMG_4003

So healthy!

Finally my younger brother ordered a Bacon, and Egg Sandwich (crispy, crunchy bacon that melted in your mouth with an oozing, warm egg on a buttered toast).

IMG_4001

Eggs-cellent!

For dessert I ordered a cold, creamy homemade chocolate chip cookie dough batter ice cream shake.

IMG_4009

I scream for ice cream!

My brother also had  homemade chocolate chip cookie dough batter ice cream. Instead of a shake he had a  cone that he loved.

IMG_4008

My brother almost devoured this before I could get the picture.

The food was very good and it was great to return once again to an oldie but a goodie. The atmosphere at the Candy Kitchen was calming and the colors reminded me of the Long Island Sound. The service at the restaurant was very average , the waitstaff did not go above and beyond their call of duty. The value was very reasonable and could accommodate almost everyone’s price ranges. Overall I loved returning to the Candy Kitchen and I would love to come again soon. I would give it ZZZ- 3 Z’s- Yum!

My Dad cooks better than Dad’s in Wallingford

” Waffles are just pancakes with syrup traps…”

Unknown Author.

Last weekend we traveled to Dad’s Breakfast Restaurant (740 N Colony Rd, Wallingford, CT, http://www.dadswallingford.com) to try some breakfast cuisine and in the process visit my brother at school.

IMG_3885

A perfect view of the sign.

Wallingford does not have many good choices to eat at, but we had heard about Dad’s before from numerous different people. As we entered Dad’s we noticed that the restaurant was extremely small and had a slightly dull feel to it. Although it was fairly small and had a slightly nondescript feel to it, the line to enter the restaurant was out the door.

When we were finally at the front of the line we were greeted by an extremely friendly group of waitresses who kindly sat us and explained numerous dishes on the menu. When it was time to order, we got Hungarian Pancakes (moist, fluffy, dense pancakes rolled up with sweet cinnamon and sugar in the middle and sticky, silky maple syrup slathered on).

IMG_3889

Hungarian Delights!

In addition to that my dad ordered a Special of the Day, pillowy scrambled eggs, crisp, garlicky roasted potatoes, tender, juicy kielbasa (a mildly spiced sausage), and perfectly roasted, fresh onions and charred roasted peppers).

IMG_3887

A heaping portion of eggs and kielbasa

My brother ordered a 1 x 1 x 1 (a lonely, raw-yolked egg, a soft, grainy pancake, and a crispy, crunchy slice of bacon).

On the side we had heaping, hot portion of homefries. The homefries were eaten quickly by my brother before I could taste them.

IMG_3890

Gone in an instant!

My mom got a Greek Omelette (vibrant, green, spinach, smooth, velvety feta cheese, dark black olives, and juicy tomatoes). She enjoyed the omelette and told us that she would get it again.

IMG_3888

Eggcellent!

The atmosphere of Dad’s was tiny and lacking color, but made up for that with the excitement, and bright cheerfulness of the waitress’. The value at the restaurant was reasonable but we received small portions. Overall Dad’s was fine but I don’t believe I will be returning anytime soon. I would give it- ZZZ- 3 Z’s- Decent.

wHEN in Rome!

“The laziest man I ever met put popcorn in his pancakes so they would turn over by themselves.”

W. C. Fields

On Easter Sunday we made a trip to the Red Hen located in the lobby of the Westport Inn (1595 Post Rd E, Westport, CT 06880, (203) 293-4113) . The Red Hen (a Farm to Table restaurant)  has only been open a month but has attracted hoards of hungry customers already. The Red Hen is unique because they serve breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. The restaurant looks a lot like a farmhouse and is extremely clean/crisp (maybe because it has been open for only a month). When we entered we were quickly seated at a small table and we were soon greeted by a very friendly waitress who answered our numerous questions and even catered to one special request (more about this later).

For brunch we had, Frenchman’s Pain Perdu (spongy, moist French toast with decadent powdered sugar, sweet, sticky syrup and smooth, creamy butter). This French Toast was fantastic and the toppings were even greater!

IMG_3873

The Toastess with the Mostest

My Mom had Gluten-Free Pancakes (fluffy, pillowy (surprisingly decent) pancakes doused in molasses-like syrup). She loved these pancakes! She thought it was very novel and exciting to have/discover the ever so rare, gluten-free pancakes.

IMG_3870

Gluten-Free Delight!

My brother had an omelette with crisp, crunchy bacon and numerous varieties of gooey cheese. The first go around, the omelette was fairly raw. They very nicely took the omelette back and cooked it to fluffy perfection.

IMG_3874

Second times a charm

My dad had a breakfast combo plate (mouth-watering eggs, a cloud-like gluten-free pancake, and unappetizing looking (I did not try them) beans).

IMG_3872

Good eggs, sad beans

For the table to share we had a healthy-helping of fried Arctic Char. The fish was crispy on the outside and succulent and tender (it was very salmon like) on the inside. This was my special request. It was the catch of the day and I was able to choose how it was prepared.

IMG_3875

CHARming!

The food at the Red Hen was decent but I will cut them a little slack because they are a brand new restaurant. The atmosphere of the Red Hen was homey, simple  and reminiscent of a farm house. The value of the restaurant was fairly reasonable for the portions of food we got. The service was well intentioned but unfortunately they seemed short handed and as a result the food arrived slowly. I would recommend the Red Hen after it works out some kinks. I would rate it- ZZV- 2 1/2 Z’s- Good but needs a little help!

There have been many restaurants in the Westport Inn, but hopefully this one works out.

Score at Bucks T-4!

“Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon”.

Doug Larson

A few weeks ago we traveled to Bucks T-4 in Big Sky, Montana (http://www.buckst4.com/ 46625 U.S. 191, Gallatin Gateway, Mt 59730) to try some REAL Montana cuisine. Bucks is a full time restaurant and hotel. We have been to Bucks numerous times  over the years.

IMG_3753

The Boys are back in Town

When we entered Bucks we noticed the western atmosphere. We saw the numerous animal heads on each wall and the large use of logs in the construction of Bucks. Bucks has numerous dining rooms throughout the restaurant, but we sat in the original dining room. One special feature of Bucks is its Game Room (my young cousins loved the game room and did not even want to eat dinner).

The original dinning room is very dark, but is a lot nicer than the other rooms. It is secluded and isolated from everything else and gave us a comfortable vibe. After we were seated, we were greeted by an extremely accommodating, friendly waiter who took our orders and even fulfilled some special requests, asked for by, yours truly. When it was time to place our appetizer orders we had, “Bacon and Eggs” (crisp juicy seared pork belly, a quail egg with a golden yellow yolk, sour, vibrant red onion confit, super sweet lingonberry jam, tart arugula, a light/airy  cherry vinaigrette, and crunchy cracker bread for sandwich purposes). Although this dish was extremely creative, it was not delicious.

IMG_3761

This was good, but not egg-cellent

We also had Calamari (crispy, perfectly fried calamari, tossed in sweet chili sauce, and served with a smooth lemon aioli).

IMG_3759

Everything tastes better fried!

For our entrees we ordered, a Duck Bacon (it was supposed to be meatloaf)  Grilled Cheese (gooey smoked cheddar and warm melted swiss cheese, numerous slices of crunchy, mouthwatering duck bacon, homemade smokey tomato ketchup for dipping, toothsome, delicious onion straws, thick, puffy, pillowy, soft sliced sourdough, and grainy hand cut Montana fries).

IMG_3767

Don’t Duck and Cover- this Duck Bacon was Awesome

We also had a huge rack of ribs (a meaty rack of S.T. Louis pork ribs, that were slowly cooked and honey brined). They were served with a house made spicy barbeque sauce. You could slather as much sauce on as you wished.

IMG_3773

These Ribs will stick to your ribs!

In addition to that my brother had a burger and my mom had fish.  My brother ordered the double double beef burger erupting with warm, mouth-watering juices and squeezed in between two pillowy buns.

IMG_3764

Double Double = Double the fun

My mom had the walleye. It was encrusted in crisp pistachios and was moist flakey, and crunchy.

IMG_3762

This Walleye caught my eye

My Aunt had a succulent steak smothered in crisp fried onions and sauteed mushrooms. I did not eat this but it looked great.

IMG_3769

Fried onions can make a dish

Overall the food was very yummy and I will definitely have to get the duck bacon grilled cheese again! For dessert we ordered several Skillet Cookies ( freshly baked chocolate chip cookie chock full of smooth melted chocolate chips in an indivudual cast iron skillet). The cookie was topped off with a healthy helping of cold vanilla ice cream (Wilcoxsons).

IMG_3775

One of the best creations I’ve ever had

The cookie was fantastic, and could be one of the sole reasons I return to Bucks T 4)

The atmosphere of Bucks is solely decorated on a western theme.  The heads on the walls make you feel like you were in an old western film, or roaming through the woods. The service was spot on. Our waiter was extremely helpful and even catered to my request of Duck Bacon. He was very friendly and kind to all the members of my family. The value was fairly expensive but would be an excellent choice for a night on the town in Montana. It is definitely a bit of a splurge but most of the time the food, service, and atmosphere would be worth the trip. I would give it ZZZV-3 1/2 Z’s-Good!

Say Cheese!

A few weekends ago we traveled to Ousel and Spur Pizza Co. 50 Ousel Falls Road, Big Sky MT. (http://www.ouselandspurpizza.com). This was not the only time we ate at Ousel and Spur, we ate the pizza a second time later in the week! The second time we ordered take out. It is very surprising to see such a modern, refined pizza restaurant in Big Sky, Montana, but Ousel and Spur fits that description perfectly.

The atmosphere of Ousel and Spur is very cool, modern, and most of all clean. It seemed that the designers of the restaurant wanted to create a nice, contemporary restaurant that people would want to return to, time and time again. After we were sat down, we were greeted by a waitress that was fairly nice and even joked around with us at some points in our meal.

When it was time to order starters we got, Winter Polenta (creamy yellow polenta, fresh winter squash, moist kale, juicy wild mushrooms, and velvety chèvre cheese). In addition to that we had a Shrimp Crostini and an Arugula Salad. The shrimp crostini had tender, fresh shrimp, vibrant red peppers, sautéed kale, all piled high on a slice of crisp local Montana bread. The Arugula Salad had bitter Arugula, sweet, bright red beets, warm, toasted hazelnuts, smooth creamy Chèvre cheese, a juice filled Asian pear, and a light, airy Prosecco Vinaigrette.

For our entrees we obtained, a Margherita Pizza (smooth, fresh mozzarella cheese, tangy tomato sauce, herbaceous basil to enhance the flavor of the pies, a grated Grana Padano cheese, and a silky olive oil).

IMG_3679

Sweeta Margherita!

In addition to that we had a onion/truffle oil pizza (my absolute favorite), a bacon pizza, and a pepperoni, egg, and garlic pizza.

IMG_3683

When the Moon hits your Eye….

All of these pizzas had hot gooey cheese, oozing from their crispy, charred crusts. The onion truffle oil pizza was an unbeatable combo. The sweet sautéed onions matched perfectly with the decadent, fragrant smell/taste of the caramelized onions. The bacon on the bacon pizza was crunchy, and very satisfying. Unfortunately on my pepperoni, egg, and garlic pizza, they messed up my order, and gave me peppers instead of pepperoni. The egg on the pizza was bursting with a warm, golden, yellow yolk.

IMG_3685

I wish the whole pizza was Egg-cellent!

They also gave me raw garlic instead of roasted garlic. My Mom ordered a gluten free pizza!

My Mom said it was better than it looked

The (unappetizing looking) pizza had juice-filled peppers, smooth chèvre cheese, moist spinach, and tangy olives. My Mom loved it!

For dessert we ordered moose tracks ice cream. The moose tracks is made by the best ice cream maker ever, Wilcoxsons!

Moose Track-ular

Moose tracks contains rich, swirled fudge, mini peanut buttercups, and cold, refreshing vanilla ice cream.

The meal was fine, but certainly not something to get worked up about. The service was decent, but our waitress messed up my order in two ways and was not very friendly. The atmosphere of Ousel and Spur was awesome. It was crisp, clean, and precise in all that was in the restaurant. The value of Ousel and Spur was very reasonable for the huge amount of food we ate. Overall Ousel and Spur was good pizza for Montana but if it were anywhere else, the restaurant would not do as well as it does in Montana. I would not recommend it, but if you have a craving for pizza and you happen to be in Montana, this is the place for you. I would give it, ZZZ- 3 Z’s- Fine.
